About Ismayilli

An Ismayilli trip can take you from the sound of a coppersmith's hammer to a woodland trail. Lahij's stone lanes, Basgal's silk-scarf craft, Ivanovka's village food and the forest around Garanohur offer different reasons to visit.

These stops are spread across the district. Choose a craft day or a nature day for a first visit. With two or three days, book accommodation that fits your route rather than driving back and forth across the district.

Why Visit Ismayilli?

Watch copperwork in Lahij, choose a silk scarf in Basgal and pause over village tea. For an active day, give Garanohur its own slot. Families who prefer gentle outings can focus on lanes, workshops and a garden stay instead of a long hike.

Where Is Ismayilli?

The district sits on the Shamakhi–Ismayilli–Gabala corridor. Save separate map pins for Ismayilli town, Lahij, Basgal and Ivanovka. Reaching the town does not mean reaching your mountain guesthouse; allow for winding roads and the final transfer.

Stay in Lahij for early walks through quieter lanes, near Basgal for a craft day, or in Ismayilli town for journeys in different directions. For Galajig and other villages, check the exact address, final access road, hot water, heating and cooling. Ask whether a pool, breakfast or barbecue facilities cost extra.

Things to See and Do

Collage of mountain scenery, a cobbled street, an autumn lake and poppies
Crafts, woodland and village scenery on an Ismayilli trip

1. Lahij's stone lanes

Allow several hours for workshops, stone houses and small shops. Comfortable shoes help on cobbled surfaces.

2. Lahij copper workshops

Lahij copper craftsmanship is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage. Arrange a demonstration or class with the workshop. UNESCO entry

3. Basgal and kelaghayi

Combine a lane walk with a silk-scarf workshop. The UNESCO inscription concerns the craft, rather than the entire settlement being a World Heritage Site. About kelaghayi

4. Ivanovka

Visit for village life, dairy produce and local bread. Arrange farm and home visits with their owners.

5. Garanohur Lake

Reserve a separate day for the forest hike. Do not plan to drive to the water: confirm the Talistan-area trailhead, conditions and walking time with a local guide. Garanohur is different from roadside Nohur Lake in Gabala.

6. Javanshir Fortress

Locate the monument near Talistan correctly on your map. Check the approach and current visiting arrangements locally; do not assume a vehicle road reaches the ruins.

7. Ismayilli Local History Museum

A starting point for the district's history and daily life. Check current opening hours before visiting.

8. Galajig and surrounding villages

Consider a village stay, local lunch and short walk. Ask separately about woodland access and private land.

Quieter Stops

Explore side lanes in Basgal, small craft shops in Lahij or a village meal arranged with a host. For Diyalli and other villages, choose a specific address rather than a vague map area. Check spring-water suitability and picnic access locally.

One, Two and Three Days

One day: Leave Baku early, explore Lahij's lanes and workshops, have lunch and return. If Basgal is your priority, build the day around it instead.

Two days: Spend day one in Lahij and stay overnight. Choose Basgal or Ivanovka for day two, adjusting the order to your accommodation.

Three days: Add the Garanohur hike when the weather suits it. Avoid combining a long walk with several distant villages on the same day.

What to Eat

Walnut-topped sweets on a tray
A tea break with local sweets

Look for saj, qovurma, village cheese, sour cream, fresh bread, honey and tea with preserves. Ask where produce comes from and how it is stored.

Confirm serving size and any service charge before ordering.

Getting Around the District

Walk within the town center, but plan separate transport between villages. For a taxi outing, agree the return journey, waiting time and final address in one fare. Ask about the last public-transport departure before heading out.

The group columns divide 44–52 AZN of return-trip fuel. Car hire, a hiking guide and extra nights are excluded. Local transport is an example allowance; distant village transfers increase the cost.

Practical Information

Carry cash for small village purchases, drinking water and suitable walking shoes, plus a layer for evenings. Save maps and your host's number before going into areas with weak reception. For walks, classes and tours, agree duration, meeting point and inclusions.

Where to Go Next

Read the Gabala blog for a westbound extension. Shamakhi can extend a craft itinerary, while Goychay adds a seasonal-produce theme. Calculate travel from your final village, rather than assuming every destination is close to town.
